The Fourth of Iyar – Remembrance Day§

1.
(a)The fourth of Iyar is a day of remembrance for the heroism of the fighters of the Israel Defence Forces who gave their lives for the assurance of the existence of the State of Israel and of the fighters of Israel's campaigns who fell for the sake of the revival of Israel, for communion with their memory and for the elevation of their acts of heroism.
(b)If the fourth of Iyar falls on a Friday, Remembrance Day shall be observed on the second of Iyar of that year; if it falls on a Thursday, Remembrance Day shall be observed on the third of Iyar of that year; if it falls on a Sunday, Remembrance Day shall be observed on the fifth of Iyar of that year.

Commencement and Conclusion of Remembrance Day§

2.

Remembrance Day commences at sunset on the eve of the fourth of Iyar, or the third of Iyar, or the second of Iyar, as the case may be, and concludes at nightfall on the following day.

Manner of Observance of Remembrance Day§

3.

On Remembrance Day there shall be, throughout the country, a two-minute silence during which all work shall cease and all road traffic shall stop; flags on public buildings shall be lowered to half-mast; memorial services and public assemblies shall be held; communion ceremonies shall be conducted in Israel Defence Forces camps and in educational institutions; broadcast programmes shall express the distinctive character of the day.

Prohibition of Charging Payment§

3a.

No payment shall be charged for participation in memorial services, public assemblies or communion ceremonies as referred to in section 3, or in other events marking Remembrance Day, organised by a government ministry or a funded body; in this section, "funded body" means a budgeted body and a supported body as defined in the Budget Foundations Law, 5745-1985, a public institution supported under section 3a of that Law, and also a body in whose budget the State or a local authority participates, directly or indirectly.

Prohibition of Public Entertainment§

4.
(a)No public entertainment shall be held on Remembrance Day.
(b)On the eve of Remembrance Day, coffee houses shall be closed from the commencement of Remembrance Day until sunrise on the following day.
(c)A person who contravenes the provisions of subsection (a) or (b) shall be liable to a fine.
(d)For the purposes of this Section, "public entertainment" has the meaning assigned to it in the Business Licensing Law, 5728-1968.

Absence of a Family Member from Work§

4a.
(a)A family member of a fallen soldier of Israel's campaigns is entitled to be absent from work on Remembrance Day; for this purpose, an employee who is absent from work shall be regarded as if he had worked.
(b)For the purposes of this Section, "family member" means parents, grandparents, a spouse, children, brothers and sisters, and includes a person at whose table an orphan of a fallen soldier of Israel's campaigns is dependent, provided that such person is not the widow or widower of that fallen soldier.

Instructions for the Observance of Remembrance Day§

5.

The Minister of Defence, in consultation with the Public Advisory Council appointed for the purposes of the Military Cemeteries Law, 5710-1950, may issue instructions for the observance of Remembrance Day in accordance with this Law.
